Freelancer, agency or website builder: what fits your business?
Wix and co., a web agency or a freelance developer? An honest comparison for small and mid-sized businesses: cost, effort, quality and lock-in.

There are basically three ways to get a website: yourself with a builder, with an agency, or with a freelance developer. None is always right. Here's an honest comparison, even though I'm one of the three.
Website builder (Wix, Jimdo, Squarespace …)
- Good for: very small budget, simple business-card site, you have time yourself
- Pros: quick start, monthly fee instead of a project price
- Cons: your time is the price; limited design and features; hard to move away; speed and SEO often mediocre
Web agency
- Good for: large projects with many stakeholders, marketing campaigns, corporate design
- Pros: many disciplines under one roof, capacity for big teams
- Cons: higher cost from overhead; you often talk to project managers, not the developers
Freelance developer
- Good for: businesses that want a custom solution without agency overhead
- Pros: direct line to the person writing the code; fast decisions; often fairer prices
- Cons: limited capacity; check references and how cover and support are handled
Three questions that make it easier
- 01
How much time do you have yourself?
Little time argues against a builder.
- 02
Do you need more than a business card?
Shop, booking, ordering or automation point to a custom solution.
- 03
Who should own everything in the end?
Make sure code, content and domain belong to you.
