Website maintenance: what happens when nobody looks after it?
A website isn't finished at launch. What can go wrong without updates, backups and monitoring, and what regular maintenance actually covers.
Many websites are built once and then forgotten. That works for a while, until one day the contact form stops sending, Google shows a warning or the site doesn't load at all.
What happens without maintenance
- Security holes: outdated plugins and software are the most common way in for attackers.
- Silent failures: forms, bookings or payments stop working and nobody notices.
- Expired certificates: the browser warns visitors about an insecure site.
- Slower pages: the tech ages, and Google and visitors punish it.
- No backup: after an error or attack, everything is gone.
What regular maintenance covers
- 01
Updates
Keep software, plugins and dependencies current, tested first.
- 02
Backups
Automatic backups, stored separately and restorable.
- 03
Monitoring
Uptime and key functions are checked continuously.
- 04
Small changes
Text, images, opening hours and prices updated quickly.
WordPress needs extra care
The more plugins a site has, the more can go out of date or clash. Custom-built sites have fewer moving parts, but they still need updates and monitoring.
Signs of a neglected website
- The last update in the admin area was months ago.
- The footer shows an old year.
- You don't know who has the logins or where the site is hosted.
- There's no backup that has ever been tested.
